The one rule that makes dB numbers intuitive

Forget everything else and remember this:

Every +10 dB = sounds twice as loud

50 dB → 60 dB = twice as loud. 60 dB → 70 dB = twice again. So 70 dB sounds four times louder than 50 dB.

This single rule lets you interpret any comparison:

  • Your bedroom is 35 dB. Your office is 55 dB. The office sounds roughly 4x louder (two doublings of 10 dB each).
  • You measured 72 dB at a restaurant. A nightclub is 100 dB. The club sounds about 8x louder (roughly three doublings).
  • Traffic reads 80 dB. A chainsaw is 100 dB. The chainsaw sounds 4x louder and is 100x more intense in energy.

Common meter readings and what causes them

If you're getting a reading you didn't expect, here's what typically produces each range in a home or office:

How to get a reliable reading

A few quick tips so you're not misinterpreting your meter:

Run for at least 60 seconds. Sound fluctuates. A single snapshot might catch a door closing or a truck passing. The average over a minute tells you the real story.

Look at the average, not the peak. Peaks happen (a cough, a plate clanking). Your sustained noise floor is what matters for focus, sleep, and hearing safety. The sound meter shows both - use the average.

Measure during typical activity. Don't measure your bedroom at 3 AM if you want to know what it's like when you're actually trying to sleep at 11 PM with traffic outside. Measure the conditions you're actually living in.

Keep the mic unobstructed. Don't cover the microphone with your hand or put the device face-down. Point it toward the primary noise source if you're trying to identify what's causing your reading.

40 dB is a quiet library or a suburban street at night with no traffic. You can hear yourself blink. It's the upper limit of what most people consider 'silent' - peaceful enough for deep sleep and focused work without any distraction.

What's a good noise level for an office?

Is 70 dB twice as loud as 60 dB?
Roughly yes. Every 10 dB increase sounds approximately twice as loud to human ears, even though it represents 10 times more sound energy. So 70 dB feels about double the loudness of 60 dB, and 80 dB feels four times louder than 60 dB.
What dB level requires hearing protection?
85 dB sustained for 8+ hours. At 90 dB, safe time drops to 2.5 hours. At 100 dB, only 15 minutes. If your meter consistently reads above 85 during an activity (mowing, workshop, concert), wear earplugs. Below 85, no protection needed regardless of duration.
