SoundMeter Online provides approximate sound level readings based on your device's microphone input. These readings are not calibrated, not traceable to any national or international measurement standard, and not suitable for any purpose requiring certified accuracy. The decibel values displayed are computed using standard RMS calculations applied to the raw audio signal captured by the Web Audio API, but without reference-level calibration, these values represent relative levels rather than absolute sound pressure levels.

Not a Medical Device

This tool does not assess hearing capability, diagnose hearing conditions, or measure hearing thresholds. It is not a medical device and has not been evaluated or approved by any health regulatory authority. If you suspect hearing damage or loss, consult a licensed audiologist or ENT specialist. Do not rely on dB readings from this tool to determine whether your hearing has been affected by noise exposure or to make decisions about hearing protection needs in occupational settings.

Not a Compliance Tool

Measurements from this website do not constitute evidence for regulatory compliance with OSHA, EPA, WHO, NIOSH, or any local, state, national, or international noise ordinance or regulation. Workplace noise assessments must be conducted with instruments meeting IEC 61672 Class 1 or Class 2 specifications, operated by qualified personnel, with current calibration certificates traceable to national standards. Environmental noise surveys for planning applications, construction permits, or neighbor disputes require similarly certified equipment and methodology.

Device Variability

Different devices produce significantly different readings for the same sound source due to hardware variations. Factors contributing to device variability include:

  • Microphone type and quality — MEMS microphones in phones differ substantially from condenser microphones in laptops or USB microphones
  • Microphone placement — built-in microphones may be partially occluded by device cases, positioned near fans, or affected by hand placement
  • Analog-to-digital converter quality and bit depth
  • Manufacturer-applied signal processing (noise gates, automatic gain control) that may persist despite our attempts to disable it via browser APIs
  • Operating system audio pipeline processing that occurs before the signal reaches the browser
  • Browser-specific Web Audio API implementations that may handle audio constraints differently

As a result, the same sound measured simultaneously on two different devices may show readings that differ by 5–15 dB or more. This is an inherent limitation of uncalibrated consumer hardware, not a defect in our tool.

Environmental Limitations

Browser-based sound measurement is affected by numerous environmental factors that reduce accuracy and reliability:

  • Microphone frequency response limitations — most consumer microphones have poor sensitivity below 100 Hz and above 8 kHz, meaning very low-frequency rumble and high-frequency hiss may be underrepresented
  • Room acoustics — reflections, standing waves, and reverberation can cause readings to vary based on microphone position within a room
  • Wind and air movement across the microphone diaphragm creates turbulence noise that artificially inflates readings
  • Mechanical vibrations transmitted through the device (e.g., a phone resting on a vibrating table) register as sound
  • Electromagnetic interference from nearby electronics may introduce noise into the audio signal
  • Digital clipping at very high sound pressure levels causes readings to plateau rather than accurately represent the true level
  • Background noise floor of the microphone itself sets a lower limit below which meaningful measurement is impossible

For best results, use the tool in a controlled environment, keep the microphone unobstructed, and avoid touching or moving the device during measurement.

Factors Affecting Accuracy

In addition to device and environmental factors, the following technical aspects affect measurement accuracy:

  • Browser audio processing that may not fully disable despite API constraints requesting echoCancellation=false, noiseSuppression=false, and autoGainControl=false
  • Sample rate differences between the hardware microphone and the Web Audio API context
  • FFT window size and overlap settings that affect frequency resolution and time resolution tradeoffs
  • Lack of calibration against a known reference level (such as a 94 dB or 114 dB calibrator)
  • A-weighting approximation applied in software rather than through certified analog filters
